The Toyota 100 Series
The Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series was introduced in 1998, replacing the 80 Series. Toyota offered two distinct front suspension setups: a solid front axle (live axle) on base models and an independent front suspension (IFS) on higher-spec models. The introduction of IFS improved on-road comfort but reduced articulation for extreme off-road conditions
The HDJ 100 Series was available in multiple variants:
GX – Basic workhorse model, often used for fleet and commercial applications.
GXL – The mid-spec model with additional comfort features.
VX Limited – Premium variant with leather seats, a sunroof, and advanced electronics.
Sahara – The top-of-the-line model with high-end luxury features, including woodgrain trim and a premium sound system.
2000 Update:
-Minor interior refinements and technology upgrades.
-Upgraded fuel injection system for improved fuel efficiency.
2002 Facelift:
-Restyled headlights, grille, and taillights.
-Improved interior materials and updated infotainment system.
-Refinements to the 1HD-FTE engine for better efficiency and smoother power delivery.
2005 Final Update:
-Introduction of five-speed automatic transmission in select models.
-Enhanced safety features, including improved ABS and optional side airbags.
-Final refinements to the drivetrain and electronics before the model was phased out in 2007.
- Engine: 4.2L 24-valve turbocharged inline-six diesel (1HD-FTE)
- Power: 151 kW @ 3,400 rpm
- Torque: 430 Nm @ 1,400-3,200 rpm
- Transmission: 5-speed manual / 4-speed automatic (pre-2005) / 5-speed automatic (2005+ models)
- Fuel Consumption: ~11-13L/100km (varies based on driving conditions)
- Drivetrain: Full-time 4WD with centre differential lock (VX & Sahara models)
The 1HD-FTE engine became a favourite among enthusiasts due to its reliability, smooth power delivery, and strong aftermarket support for modifications.
